I'm sad to announce mailto helper 1.2 as it should have been outdated. I don't get more than the first line of a page with the 'send page' command in netscape using Eudora 4.0.2.

mailto helper 1.1a works with the 'send page' command in netscape 4 standalone. This was a problem since eudora (at least pre 4) didn't handle mailto URLs without a recepient, i.e. things like mailto:?body=LongURLencodedURLandContentOfThePage

Update: mailto helper 1.0.2a fixes some problems under system 8.
This version requires Tanaka's OSAX for decoding URL-encoded text.

Eudora mailto helper is a slight modification of Eudora GURL handler, that

  1. does about the same thing as Eudora GURL handler i.e. it allows you to command-click on mailto:joe@abc.com links in Internet Config/TExtEdit applications if you have Internet Config and ICeTEe installed. It will then open a new Eudora message addressed to that address.

  2. can be registered with netscape®©TM (from 1.1 thru 4.0.1) so that mailto: links are directed to Eudora in the same manner

  3. handles multiple Eudora settings files (e.g. for shared macs)

Note: we've had one report from a user that can't get it to work at all, and, more seriously, one report that Eudora mailto helper has erased a saved mail in the out-box.

For Internet Config/TExtEdit or Netscape mailto: links, Eudora mailto helper can handle addresses of the type <mailto:joe@abc.com?subject=hello>

(try it).

Note that the multiple settings stuff can be achieved with "single setting"- setup simply by putting a file called Eudora folder in the system folder which will cause Eudora to ask you for a settings file on launch...
These hax are somewhat superfluous with Eudora 3, as one can register Eudora as mailto helper with netscape.

Here they are:
mailto helper 1.0a
sys 7.5, multiple settings
sys 7.5, single settings
sys 7.1, single settings
all require applescript (of course) and Eudora (likewise). The multiple settings stuff requires the "choose item" scripting addition, which should be available from scriptweb or Apple's mirror (in the gaea sub-dir.)

This is how it is supposed to work:

For use with Netscape: Backup your Netscape preferences should you ever wish to undo step. Doubleclick "register mailto/w netscape" to run this script and click on "run". To undo this, delete your Netscape preferences and restore the backup file. (A simpler method of undoing this is to just delete "Eudora mailto helper" from your computer, if you don't wish to use it at all.)

Note: If you don't use an old netscape 2 preference file, chances are that netscape won't remember the mailto preference set.
On the examples page there is now a fix this, i.e. an applescript application that fixes netscape's preference file so that registered protocols are remembered between launches. (thanks to Andrew Starr for providing info on what was missing from Netscape's prefs)

For use with Internet Config: Open Internet Config. Click on the "Helpers" square. If "mailto" is already registered click on it then click the "Change" button. Otherwise click the "Add" button and type "mailto" (without quotes.) In either case, choose "mailto helper" as the helper.

Note that you might have to rebuild your desktop for Netscape/Internet Config to find/launch "mailto helper". One way to try it before that is to launch it and leave it running (it will quit after completing its task).

Using multiple settings : If you use the "multiple settings" feature, you will be asked for a Eudora settings file (and a name for that setting) the first time you use it. Next time you will be presented with a list consisting of your one setting, if you now choose "cancel" you will be asked for a (different) settings file. If you really want to cancel things you'll have to click "cancel" again. On subsequent uses, however, it will not give you this list if Eudora is already open; it only presents this option if Eudora is not open. (A few lines of the script can be deleted for it to give you this option even if Eudora is open.)

The different settings are stored as Applescript properties, i.e. in the resources of the script/application, hence settings cannot be added if mailto helper resides on a locked drive.

No scriptable Finder: These are supplied (but not with 1.0a), but does not support multiple settings (if you want that use

this.

Unfortunately there is no way to remove stored settings other than changing creator back to "aplt", opening the script with the script editor, recompiling (add a space and remove it again), saving and changing creator again. Thus you might wish to keep a copy of your original download before installing Eudora mailto helper.

v0.1d2 adds the ability to command-click scripting@solvare.se?subject=what the... and use <a href="mailto:scripting@solvare.se?subject=what the...">what the...</a> URLs (like this: what the...). Note that spaces in subject works with ICeTEe if you select all of the URL before command-clicking.

v0.1d3 might even work... and Eudora could have any name

v0.1d4 leaves the cursor on a more appropriate place (for some - not for me)

v0.1d5 will find Eudora regardless of name. (This is really supposed to be true now, please tell me of any problems)

1.0a The version number has been bumped up, and support for extended mailto: URL has been added.
This version requires Tanaka's OSAX for decoding URL-encoded text.

my sincere thanks to
Andrew Starr (fame of his Eudora page(s))
