Many have tried to define what mathematics is, none have succeded to any
greater
extent...
To stay safe, let's keep it to problem solving in some restricted sense,
but that is really to narrow.
The very nature of mathematics does not let us add any information that
was not
there from the beginning - or rather that cannot be deduced from the
original
information. And this, of course, is exactly as it should be - what we
want
is to reformulate the original information in a way that makes more sense
to us, and this is where we might be able to help.
That a certain problem would benefit from a mathematical treatment is in general not evident, and a large part of real life mathematics is about formutating and re-formulating problems that seems hard into easier ones by extracting the crucial point.
