Physicists Use Bubbling Quantum Vacuum To Hopscotch Heat Across Empty Space Slashdotby EditorDavid on science at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at December 14, 2019, 11:05 pm)

Long-time Slashdot reader fahrbot-bot quotes Live Science: When you touch a hot surface, you're feeling movement. If you press your hand against a mug of tea, warmth spreads through your fingers. That's the sensation of billions of atoms banging together. Tiny vibrations carry thermal energy from the water to the mug and then into your skin as one molecule knocks into the next, sending it careening into a third -- and so on down the line. Heat can also cross space as waves of radiation, but without radiation, it needs stuff to pass through -- molecules to bang into other molecules. Vacuums have no 'stuff' in them, so they tend to trap heat. In Earth's orbit, for example, one of the biggest engineering challenges is figuring out how to cool down a rocket ship. But now, researchers have shown that, on microscopic scales, this isn't really true. In a new paper published Dec. 11 in the journal Nature, physicists showed that little vibrations of heat can cross hundreds of nanometers of empty space. Their experiment exploited an uncanny feature of the quantum vacuum: It isn't really empty at all.

Facebook Pledges $130 Million For Its Independent 'Content Oversight Board' Slashdotby EditorDavid on facebook at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at December 14, 2019, 9:05 pm)

"Facebook said Thursday it will commit $130 million to support the efforts of its independent oversight board," reports the Bay Area Newsgroup -- though the group won't be in place (or its members announced) until sometime in 2020. An anonymous reader quotes their report: In a company blog post, Brent Harris, Facebook's director of governance and global affairs, said the company has been going through the process of creating "a new organization with independent oversight over how Facebook makes decisions on content" since Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg outlined his vision for the board in November 2018. In September of this year, Facebook gave some details about how it was selecting board members, and set up a site where anyone could make a recommendation for a board member... The premise behind the board's creation is that it will be able to make final decisions regarding if content, including ads and video, should be displayed on Facebook, and will also have the power to overrule Zuckerberg on such matters. Facebook, as a company, and users can submit cases to the board, and Facebook will be have to make public any recommendations it reaches.

Exclusive Clip From 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' Debuts In Fortnite Slashdotby EditorDavid on starwars at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at December 14, 2019, 8:05 pm)

In 30 minutes an exclusive clip from the yet-to-be-released Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will premier in the videogame Fortnite. An anonymous reader quotes the Verge: We've known about the clip premiere since last week, but Epic disclosed some more concrete details Thursday night at the Game Awards. The studio says it'll open the gates of its virtual world starting at 1:30 p.m. EST. The clip will start airing at the Risky Reels drive-in movie theater at 2 p.m. EST. Speaking with Game Awards host Geoff Keighley yesterday, Epic's worldwide creative director Donald Mustard hinted that there would be some sort of involvement from director J.J. Abrams. We don't know if that means a live pre-show, or perhaps the director himself will intro the clip before it airs. Fortnite is also offering skins of Star Wars characters Rey and Finn, according to the article, with Mustard envisioning Fortnite as a world where all intellectual property "can live together." The Verge also predicts that the clip will eventually be available elsewhere online, while Business Insider believes "countless" Fortnite players will stream the event live on YouTube and Twitch. Meanwhile, J. J. Abrams has also asked Lucasfilm to release the original Star Wars trilogy in its original pre-Special Edition format, according to Nerdist.com, but "I've been told that, for reasons that I quite don't understand, that that's not necessarily possible."

Right wing nut jobs of Nashville Scripting News(cached at December 14, 2019, 8:03 pm)

At a BloggerCon-like conference in Nashville. 2005. My session was occupied by a small number of right wing Rush Limbaugh fans. All men, as you might imagine.

They were complaining no one was listening to them.

I was the moderator. I pointed out to the Nth guy to complain -- you know everyone is listening to you right now. Didn't matter, someone else started complaining about the same thing. They just kept saying the same words over and over, in a very angry tone.

My response was basically I can't tell you why there aren't more right wing nut jobs here, best I can do is listen and empathize and then move on to the next complaint.
