$572 Million Decision Against Johnson & Johnson in Landmark Opioid Trial Slashdotby msmash on business at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at August 26, 2019, 11:26 pm)

An anonymous reader shares a report: A judge in Oklahoma on Monday ruled against Johnson & Johnson, the deep-pocketed corporate giant, and ordered it to pay the state $572 million in the first trial of an opioid manufacturer for the destruction wrought by prescription painkillers. Johnson & Johnson, which contracted with poppy growers in Tasmania, supplied 60 percent of the opiate ingredients that drug companies used for opioids like oxycodone, the state had argued, and aggressively marketed opioids to doctors and patients as safe and effective. A Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, made its own opioids -- a pill whose rights it sold in 2015, and a fentanyl patch that it still produces. "The opioid crisis is an imminent danger and menace to Oklahomans," Judge Thad Balkman, of Cleveland County District Court, said in delivering his decision. The ruling was a resounding victory for Oklahoma's attorney general, Mike Hunter. The closely watched verdict could be a dire harbinger for some two dozen opioid makers, distributors and retailers that face more than 2,000 similar lawsuits around the country. Johnson & Johnson, one the world's biggest health care companies, said it would appeal. The judge's decision came after two other drug manufacturers that produce opioids, Purdue Pharma and Teva Pharmaceutical, settled with Oklahoma earlier this year for $270 million and $85 million, respectively. In doing so, the companies did not admit wrongdoing. As a consequence, Oklahoma faced the steep climb of pinning the blame for its opioid crisis mainly on just one defendant.

Mutant Sheep Are Being Bred in Lab To Fight Lethal Child Brain Disease Slashdotby msmash on medicine at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at August 26, 2019, 10:26 pm)

Scientists have created a flock of sheep that carry the gene for a lethal inherited brain disorder in humans. The condition, Batten disease, usually starts in childhood and is invariably fatal, often within a few years of diagnosis. From a report: The project, which is designed to test treatments for the disease, is based at Edinburgh University's Roslin Institute, where cloning techniques were used to create Dolly the sheep in 1996. The scientists acknowledge that the approach could be controversial as it involves creating animals programmed to die, but stress that their aim is to alleviate human suffering. "We have deliberately re-created the condition in a large mammal because sheep have a brain of a similar size and complexity to that of a child," said Tom Wishart, project leader. "That means treatments we test on them are much more likely to be relevant to humans than those tested only on cell cultures or mice and rats." In the UK, Batten disease affects between 100 and 150 children and young adults. It is inherited from two symptomless parents who each carry a rare recessive gene mutation. That mutation interferes with the operation of lysosomes, which act as the waste disposal systems for cells. Children who carry two copies of the faulty gene begin to suffer loss of vision, impaired cognition and mobility problems. Seizures and early death follow. "It is devastating for families," Wishart said. There are several types of Batten disease, he added. "One of the more rapid types is CLN1, and that's what we have recreated in our sheep." The Roslin scientists used the gene-editing technique Crispr-Cas9 to create the faulty CLN1 gene in the sheep. "We collected sheep embryos from the abattoir," Wishart said. "Then we fertilised them and added Crispr reagents to alter their genetic structure before implanting the embryos into a surrogate sheep's uterus."

Apple Patches iPhone Jailbreaking Bug Slashdotby msmash on ios at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at August 26, 2019, 9:16 pm)

Apple has released today an iOS security update to patch a bug the company accidentally un-patched in an earlier release, introducing a security weakness that allowed hackers to craft new jailbreaks for current iOS versions. From a report: The original bug, discovered by Ned Williamson, a Google Project Zero security engineer, allows a malicious app to exploit a "user-after-free" vulnerability and run code with system privileges in the iOS kernel. iOS version 12.4.1, released today, re-patches this bug that was initially fixed in iOS 12.3 but was accidentally unpatched in iOS 12.4, last month. Sadly, Apple's blunder didn't go unnoticed and earlier this month, a security researcher named Pwn20wnd released a public exploit based on Williamson's bug that could be used to jailbreak up-to-date iOS devices and grant users complete control over their iPhones. But while users taking a risk and jailbreaking their own devices doesn't sound that dangerous, a lesser-known fact is that malware operators and spyware vendors can also use Pwn20wnd's jailbreak as well.
