Canada Invests $65 Million in Satellite Company To Narrow Broadband Gap For Remote A Slashdotby msmash on canada at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at July 29, 2019, 11:52 pm)

The Canadian government said on Wednesday it is investing C$85 million ($64.70 million) in an Ottawa-based satellite company as part of an effort to provide better broadband internet access to rural and remote communities. From a report: Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains said the funding would be used by Telesat to build and test technologies that use low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites to boost connectivity. "This new, space-based system will provide a dramatic and disruptive improvement over existing satellites," Telesat Chief Executive Officer Dan Goldberg said, adding that the technology will be affordable and reliable. LEO satellites operate 36 times closer to the earth than traditional telecommunications satellites. This means they take less time to send and receive information, leading to better and faster broadband service, even in rural, remote and northern areas.

Tesla Cars Will Soon Be Able To Stream Netflix and YouTube Slashdotby msmash on transportation at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at July 29, 2019, 10:59 pm)

Tesla car owners will soon be able to stream videos from Netflix and YouTube from the dashboard, CEO Elon Musk said. Musk wrote that the displays in cars will "soon" be able to stream YouTube and Netflix. The software feature that enables this support could arrive as soon as next month, he said in response to a tweet. The video streaming would only work when the car has stopped -- how Tesla currently handles video games playback. In another tweet, he said the dashboard would offer "an amazingly immersive, cinematic experience" because of the car's surround sound and chairs.

Rockstar North, the Edinburgh-based developer of Grand Theft Auto, has paid no corporation tax over the past 10 years, despite making billions in revenue for its parent company Take-Two Interactive, while claiming more than $52m in tax relief. From a report: A report from the investigative thinktank TaxWatch UK estimates Rockstar Games' operating profit at $5bn between 2013 and 2019, during which time the company released Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) and Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar North is part of Rockstar Games. GTA V has sold more than 100m copies, making it one of the most profitable entertainment products of all time. It racked up $1.2bn in its first three days on sale in 2013. According to Take-Two earnings reports, GTA V's online component, GTA Online, has generated hundreds of millions in revenue. But the company paid no corporation tax between 2009 and 2018. It received $52m in tax credits from the government's video games tax relief scheme, which was set up in 2014 to bolster the UK's $6.1bn games industry, much of which is made up of small and medium-sized developers. The sum is equivalent to 19% of the total relief paid to the entire UK games industry since 2014, TaxWatch reports.

'5 Programming Languages That Are Probably Doomed' Slashdotby msmash on programming at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at July 29, 2019, 9:41 pm)

An anonymous reader shares a report: Not all programming languages endure forever. In fact, even the most popular ones inevitably crumble away, as new generations of developers embrace other languages and frameworks they find easier to work with. In order to determine which programming languages are likely doomed in the medium- to long-term, we looked at the popularity rankings by TIOBE and RedMonk, as well as Dice's own database of job postings. If your career is based on any of the following languages, we suggest diversifying your skill-set at some point: Ruby, Haskell, Objective-C, R, and Perl.
