Malware SPAM a new run has started. , (Sun, Dec 6th) SANS Internet Storm Center, InfoCON: green(cached at December 6, 2015, 11:58 pm)

Last week Brad mentioned malware being delivered via word documents in SPAM (https://isc.sans.edu/forums/diary/Malicious+spam+Subject+RE+Bill/20417/). Seems like this morning there was another run. Subjects vary and the messages vary slightly, the end result is however nasty. All have word attachments.

Subjects Seen: Transaction, LM Transaction , ENA Invoice">-------------------------------------------------

These are of course not a definitive list of subjects, but the pattern is fairly clear.

It may be an opportunity for some user education, especially those in your organisation whose job it is to click on attachments.

Cheers

Zuckerberg Answers Critics of His Move To Give Away His Facebook Stock Slashdotby samzenpus on facebook at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at December 6, 2015, 11:32 pm)

An anonymous reader writes: Mark Zuckerberg's announcement of donating $45 billion of Facebook stock garnered a lot of praise a fair bit of criticism. The Facebook CEO answered some of the apprehension in a post that reads in part: "By using an LLC instead of a traditional foundation, we receive no tax benefit from transferring our shares to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, but we gain flexibility to execute our mission more effectively. Just like everyone else, we will pay capital gains taxes when our shares are sold by the LLC."

Congress Joins Battle Against Ticket Bots Slashdotby samzenpus on government at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at December 6, 2015, 10:32 pm)

itwbennett writes: A pair of companion bills now pending in the House and Senate would define the use of bots to buy tickets as an 'unfair and deceptive practice' under the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Act. It would also become a federal crime, and create a right of action so that private parties can sue in federal court to recover damages. But if a similar law in Tennessee is any example, making the practice illegal doesn't make it any easier to find the people responsible for the bots. The Tennessean reported a year ago that, 'despite the apparent prevalence of the practice, no one has been prosecuted for this hard-to-prove crime in Davidson County.' This may be just another example of members of Congress not understanding the problem, but some experts say that making the bots illegal is at least a start. 'It helps to shine a light on a problem,' says Rami Essaid, cofounder and CEO of Distil Networks.

How To Lead a Nation That's About To Be Swallowed By the Sea Slashdotby samzenpus on earth at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at December 6, 2015, 9:02 pm)

merbs writes: Anote Tong, the president of low-lying Kiribati, has spent nearly a decade trying to save his people from rising sea levels. There's a good chance he will not succeed. This is how he leads a nation that will likely not exist in 100 years. Motherboard reports: "Kiribati’s fate provides a rare glimpse of the future world under climate change. The tiny island nation is the canary in our global coal mine, and it will bear the brunt of climate change more intensely and much sooner than nearly anywhere else. 'We cannot keep doing what we are doing,' Tong said. 'Because we may be on the front line today, but other countries, other societies, other communities will be next.'"
