YouTube Defending Select Videos Against DMCA Abuse Slashdotby timothy on google at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at November 19, 2015, 11:03 pm)

Galaga88 writes: It's not a complete solution, but YouTube is going to begin stepping up to defend select videos in court on fair use terms, including covering court costs. Will this help stem the tide of bad DMCA takedown requests, or just help the select few YouTube doesn't want to lose? From the blog post linked: We are offering legal support to a handful of videos that we believe represent clear fair uses which have been subject to DMCA takedowns. With approval of the video creators, we’ll keep the videos live on YouTube in the U.S., feature them in the YouTube Copyright Center as strong examples of fair use, and cover the cost of any copyright lawsuits brought against them. ... In addition to protecting the individual creator, this program could, over time, create a “demo reel” that will help the YouTube community and copyright owners alike better understand what fair use looks like online and develop best practices as a community.

Ask Slashdot: Convincing a Team To Undertake UX Enhancements On a Large Codebase? Slashdotby timothy on programming at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at November 19, 2015, 10:33 pm)

unteer writes: I work at a enterprise software company that builds an ERP system for a niche industry (i.e. not Salesforce or SAP size). Our product has been continuously developed for 10 years, and incorporates code that is even older. Our userbase is constantly expanding, and many of these users expect modern conveniences like intuitive UI and documented processes. However, convincing the development teams that undertaking projects to clean up the UI or build more self-explanatory features are often met with, "It's too big an undertaking," or, "it's not worth it." Help me out: What is your advice for how to quantify and qualify improving the user experience of an aging, fairly large, but also fairly niche, ERP product?

Blogs by Women: the OPML File inessential.comat January 1, 1970, 9:00 am (cached at November 19, 2015, 10:29 pm)

In Blogs by Women I presented a list of blogs of interest to Mac and iOS developers, designers, and power users that are written by women.

Today I created an OPML file — you can import it into your RSS reader to add these as subscriptions.

If your reader can take a URL, copy this URL: http://ranchero.com/downloads/Mac-iOS-Tech-Blogs-By-Women.opml

If your reader needs a file, then download this file and import it.

I was able to find feeds for all but three of the blogs on the list. That’s pretty good — but it ought to be 100%. Having a feed is hugely important if you want people to keep up with your blog.

Blogging isn’t difficult, but it’s still not yet as easy as tweeting. By creating a blog, you’re making a statement that you care about something.
