Dreamhost FTP/Shell Password Database Breached Slashdotby Soulskill on security at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at January 21, 2012, 11:01 pm)

New submitter Ccmods writes "Below is a snippet from an email Dreamhost sent to subscribers early Saturday morning, describing an intrusion into the database storing FTP and SSH usernames and passwords: 'We are writing to let you know that there may have been illegal and unauthorized access to some of your passwords at DreamHost today. Our security systems detected the potential breach this morning and we immediately took the defensive precaution of expiring and resetting all FTP/shell access passwords for all DreamHost customers and their users. ... Only the FTP/shell access passwords appear to have been compromised by the illegal access. Web panel passwords, email passwords and billing information for DreamHost customers were not affected or accessed.'"

External Link: New York Times Explains Chinese Advantage for Apple TidBITS(cached at January 21, 2012, 10:31 pm)

The New York Times has a clever and long feature article explaining why Apple (and other firms) manufacture in China for a host of reasons of which low wages may be a relatively small portion. The ability to hire a massive number of trained people nearly instantly is one factor, regardless of how well those people are treated by the contractors Apple employs. Americans typically won’t live in dormitories and work six 12-hour days in a row, but this is commonplace in China and other developing nations.

'Electric Earth' Could Explain Planet's Rotation Slashdotby Soulskill on earth at January 1, 1970, 1:00 am (cached at January 21, 2012, 10:01 pm)

sciencehabit writes "When it comes to Earth's rotation, you might think geophysicists have pretty much everything figured out. Not quite. In order to explain some variations in the way our planet spins, Earth's mantle — the layer of hot, softened rock that lies between the crust and core — must conduct electricity, an ability that the mantle as we know it shouldn't have. Now, a new study (abstract) finds that iron monoxide, which makes up 9% of the mantle, actually does conduct electricity just like a metal, but only at temperatures and pressures found far beneath the surface."
